It Never Rains but it pours…

Our vaguely beagle related blog is inspired this week by getting caught in a pre-April shower on the way to a meeting today. It was sunny and glorious when I left home to visit a customer this afternoon but by the time I had travelled all of 5 miles it was peeing it down and I was unprepared without a coat and got soaked walking to the meeting. 5 minutes later sat in a coffee house the sun was shining again.  Timing’s a wonderful thing!

Anyway this led me to think of the saying “It never rains but it pours” This phrase normally is related to negative things happening all at once and a run of bad luck but I have always used it describe the way there are bursts of new business won, usually following a period where you couldn’t  close a door.  Why does this happen?  I have always related it to a change in attitude, from winning the first bit of business helping you close the next few.  But sometimes its because you have changed a sales offering and you have hit the nail on the head with your offer.

Testing new ways of attracting customers and not relying on one form of marketing is key to your business success. Are you stuck in the mud and keep trying the same things to bring in new customers?  Exploring new ways of bringing in new customers is time consuming and can also be scary trying something new – no one likes to fail.  Also where do you find the time to try something new? Even in lean periods of new business there is also something to keep you busy…a new member of staff or year end.
